Tumbuna, which in the local language Tok Pisin means “ancestors,” is a spectacular celebration of the local traditions, with a colorful extravaganza of traditional dress, dancing and singing by local tribes. You will have the unique opportunity to witness the ways of the local people as well as meet tribal elders and hear their stories of the taim bilong timbuna, the time of the ancestors. On this special tour, you will also have the chance to explore other areas of Papua New Guinea, including Mount Hagen, Lake Murray, and rarely-visited villages from the Sepik Region.

Day 1Arrive Port Moresby / Mt Hagen
Upon arrival in Port Moresby from your international flight, you will be met and transferred to your onward domestic Air Niugini flight from Port Moresby to Mount Hagen. Mount Hagen Town is in the upper Wahgi Valley -a valley with some of the oldest evidence of agriculture in the world. Perched high on Mount Kuta is Rondon Ridge, with unbelievable views of the Wahgi Valley.

Day 2Mt Hagen / Lake Murray
In the morning after breakfast, you will transfer to the airport for your charter flight to Lake Murray. On arrival enjoy a lunch at the lodge and then proceed on an afternoon walk around the island which includes a visit to a local village -maybe by boat or a walk. There is also an option of a 2-3km hike (walk) to the station and the local market if you need to stretch your legs.

Day 3Lake Murray
Spend a full day of cultural and ecological touring. Visit the Pari tribe. Demonstrations will include traditional bilas display, traditional weaving, tribal warriors and a traditional sing-sing and chance to share stories with the villagers.

Day 4 Sepik and Villages
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for your charter flight Lake Murray to Karawari. From Karawari airstrip, you will be transferred by riverboat and four-wheel drive to Karawari Lodge. Sitting on a ridge above the Karawari River, Karawari Lodge boasts a spectacular view over hundreds of kilometers of a dense tropical jungle. It is inspired by local architecture and built with traditional materials, while still providing modern comforts. Proceed with lunch then follow with an afternoon visit to Kundiman village for a sago making demonstration. Sago is the staple food for the river people.

Days 5-6 Sepik River Region
While touring these days you will visit villages where the people are prolific and famous carvers. Here, you can purchase many interesting items such as masks, elaborately carved hooks, ancestral figures, hand drums, baskets, bilums, and gourds. Enjoy excursions along the jungle-fringed waterways of the Karawari River where boatmen, standing upright, paddle their slender dugout canoes adorned with sculpted silhouettes of crocodile masks.

Day 7 Karawari / Mt. Hagen
In the morning, bid farewell to the Sepik Region and transfer to Karawari airstrip for your charter flight to Mt. Hagen. During the flight, you’ll notice that mountains rise up to startling heights out of the flatlands of the Sepik Basin.
Mt. Hagen is located in the upper Wahgi Valley—a valley with some of the oldest evidence of agriculture in the world. You will be met and transferred to your accommodations, Rondon Ridge, perched high on Mount Kuta, with unbelievable views of the Wahgi Valley. Once settled, enjoy an afternoon nature walk on the trails around the hotel.

Day 8 Tumbuna Sing Sing
Today, a full day is spent at the Tumbuna sing sing—witness traditional dances, interact with Stone Age cultures and hear stories about “taim bilong tumbuna” (time of the ancestors). The show is attended by over 180 tribesmen and women from more than 15 different tribes in the highlands and coastal areas of the mainland. Watch the groups prepare their bilas (traditional dress) before the dancing starts, and mingle with the performers as they prepare.
Picnic lunch will be provided at the show grounds.

Day 9 Mt Hagen / Port Moresby
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Port Moresby. (Air Niugini 181) Upon arrival in Port Moresby, you will be met and taken to your hotel. After lunch, enjoy a guided half-day tour of Port Moresby Nature Park.
