Leaving Wellington, travel north along the Kapiti Coast and towards Mt. Ruapehu, an active volcano in the World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park. Journey along the shores of Lake Taupo, formed in the basin of a collapsed volcano and is approximately the same size as Singapore. Get out and stretch your legs at Huka Falls and see the powerful currents of the river funneling through the 20m wide gorge and cascade into the blue / green pool below. Weather permitting, cruise to Cape Brett, a promontory which extends north into the Pacific Ocean and where rugged cliffs rise out of the ocean. See the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’ formation, a natural passage through one of the rock islands. Cruise back to Paihia for a relaxing evening.
